While I'm Thinking About It

Come to think of it, most of us have better cast pages than he does.

Back in the early days, webcomics weren't something you discovered on your own. Someone had to introduce you to them. At least that's how it happened to me, back in 1998 when a buddy at the time introduced me to Sluggy Freelance. It sure seemed amusing enough, mixing of adventure and humor in strange and fascinating ways. I liked it well enough, but something bugged me. It's not like Pete Abrams was trying for syndication or anything, it was just there, and anyone who wanted to could read the entire archives, as often as they wanted, for free.

That was the real sticking point, right there. If the Archive.org is to be believed, there weren't even banner ads at that point. Why bother doing something like that if there's no way to get paid for it?

I am well aware of the irony here, thank you very much.

Anyway, Sluggy had already been running for over a year by the time I let myself get addicted to it. If I was introduced to it in relatively late1998, that would mean it started sometime in 1997. Ten years ago on August 25th, to be exact.

I have trouble wrapping my head around that. I don't think TRU-Life Adventures is going to make it that long, just because I think I only have a couple more years worth of story. Of course, I've been saying that all along since 2001.

I would have mentioned the anniversary sooner (like, when it happened), but was in the middle of website-changey stuff and didn't want to get distracted. But congratulations!
