While I'm Thinking About It

So . . . new movie trailer premiered online Monday

Check it out here

I have, at various times, been a larger fan of Star Trek in all its many forms than may have been technically healthy. But I'm feeling much better, now, thanks for asking.

Based on that trailer, yeah, I'm looking forward to the new movie. It looks like it'll be a fun romp of an adventure, with a level of energy and motion we usually don't get to see in starship battles. I'm looking forward to that.

I'm even looking forward to seeing what these new actors do with the roles. It doesn't matter to me in the least that Kirk, Spock, and the rest have been recast, thanks to a little something I like to call perspective. Lots of people have played James Bond, and Tarzan, and Batman, and Sherlock Holmes, and nobody really bats an eye when those roles get recast. Even Joe Friday's been credibly portrayed by three different actors. Messing with the sacred continuity? Meh. Go watch the original series again, see how coherent your precious timeline really is.

"But . . . but . . . they're doing things I don't like." So what? This new movie takes nothing away from the hundreds of hours of TV and film that are already out there. Go check, I'll bet Amazon still has everything available.

"It's either the eleventh movie of the series, or the first of a new series. Either way, odd-numbered Trek films are no good." True, but this one has all new people behind it. The last time that happened we got Wrath of Kahn, so I remain cautiously optimistic.
