While I'm Thinking About It

So, how was your weekend?

Opening the first

It doesn't happen as much as it used to, but I'm one of those people that people just seem to recognize. Oh, sure, sometimes it happens that we're able to sort out where it is they've seen me before--often it's the bookstore--but more often there's no reason than I must have one of those faces.

Opening the second

I've only met a small handful of my fellow webcartoonists, but they've all been fairly cool people (for varying values of "cool," naturally).

I met Kris Straub at a signing downtown Saturday. I stand in awe of people who can just whip out a quick ink sketch without having to do any sort of underdrawing first. Especially if it's a character they haven't drawn in awhile. It'll sometimes take me two or three times to get Jack's hair looking right in pencil.

Alas, by the time I got down there, I was already starting to nurse a bit of a headache in addition to the sore legs (that, frankly I was expecting and were my own fault), so I wasn't at my best. See, Saturday was also the big grand opening of Portland's newest light rail line, one that passes by about a mile from home (explaining the sore legs--I walked and am a bit out of shape) and heads downtown (or to Clackamas Town Center if you get on the southbound train, but I digress). The big grand opening, and as a result, all rides were free.

Basic economic theory time, folks: if you offer a service at no charge, demand will skyrocket and ain't nobody gonna be happy with the outcome. And some of those unhappy people will complain.

Loudly.

The entire time.

Right in my ear.

And if I were to strangle them, I'd be the one going to jail. How is that fair?
